The first episode was due to issues with Northern Rail. Northern Rail planned to cancel most of its services for a length of time creating the local MP Tim Farron to express his anger and frustration.
Calls from the local community, MP's, passengers and alike for Northern to hand the line over permanently was the main request. Many thought they were being failed by Northern Rail to run an essential railway service into one of the countries most popular and beautiful parts.
When I visited the line initially I found the bus replacement service to be very important and busy. Busy until the team at West Coast Railways in Carnforth ran a locomotive set on to Platform 3 at Oxenholme willing to provide a FREE service!
It was a huge success, in a fashion for commuter travel in and out of Windermere, Kendal and other stations on this line.
WCR staff are most efficient, quietly working hard in the shadows making sure nothing is to fail.
From perfect punctuality, smart uniforms and spacious carriages it seems this is a marriage made perfect for the lakes line.
Many question the timing of the works and are quite captious of the bus replacement service, however as with last year WCR came back to run a shuttle service along this line over the Easter period of maintenance.

Once again you can not fault WCR for the efforts and professionalism exercised on the line. This rail operator is one to watch, reasons being that they are keen to run a passenger service on this section with improvements.
Now, speculatively speaking I was told WCR would buy extra stock and install a loop on this line to increase capacity and operation.
Today the service was very busy, a head count of nearly 200 just on one trip of three coaches.
Local business David Willans think the line deserves a better chance of progress, in turn promoting the lakes with a heritage train set - possible wishes of steam.
Who knows what will lay in store for this line especially with the chance of more 'open access' services and nationalisation.
But for now, lets hope WCR do return to cover the services again as I for one champion their success and thank them for doing such a grand job!
