Travelling on the Lakes line today was a great experience in rail travel with the temporary shuttle service from Oxenholme the Lake District to Windermere.
For the second time within 10 months West Coast Railway have run a shuttle service concurrently with a bus replacement service along the Lakes Line in Cumbria.
The first episode was due to issues with Northern Rail. Northern Rail planned to cancel most of its services for a length of time creating the local MP Tim Farron to express his anger and frustration.
Calls from the local community, MP's, passengers and alike for Northern to hand the line over permanently was the main request. Many thought they were being failed by Northern Rail to run an essential railway service into one of the countries most popular and beautiful parts.
Northern resumed services at a quicker pace as the pressure was mounting from all angles and making national news.
When I visited the line initially I found the bus replacement service to be very important and busy. Busy until the team at West Coast Railways in Carnforth ran a locomotive set on to Platform 3 at Oxenholme willing to provide a FREE service!
The second episode is solely due to essential work maintenance on the West Coast Main Line (WCML). These works were planned many months back and in fairness the work must be carried out in a safe and efficient manner.
Many question the timing of the works and are quite captious of the bus replacement service, however as with last year WCR came back to run a shuttle service along this line over the Easter period of maintenance.
