Why a Newsletter from a group of Station Friends, well it’s like this you see, there is a station in your locality called Squires Gate, (it was formerly known Stony Hill) and it was at some point going to be called Blackpool International Airport. (You can find out more on Wikipedia).
The station is in within the Fylde Council and St Anne’s Town Council boundaries, but more importantly part of St Anne’s. Currently the Friends of St Anne’s and Squires Gate Stations maintain it in partnership with Northern Railway, Network Rail and ISS.
Ultimately we keep the station looking tidy for visitors and local passengers, hopefully like you and me.
We are trying to gain a Licence from Network Rail to take over the redundant overgrown Platform 2 tidy it up and insert some beds to grow flowers, vegetables and fruit for the community.
In the immediate future we are hopeful that “step free access” will be achieved, this will make the station more accessible to users with disabilities, other infirmities, cyclists and families with prams who are currently denied access because the staircase down to the platform is a non-negotiable area. Hopefully this will occur during 2019 and will boost station use.
Finally and this in the important bit, we need people to support us by joining the Friends of Squires Gate Station and the reason for that is because we need to make “your” station vibrant and a credit to the people who live in the locality. Members come from all walks of life so don’t feel you have to have any skills or abilities. Whatever you can offer we will be able to embrace and welcome you.
If you can help please do get in touch with us, details of how to do so can be found below.
